Boromir is killed and the Fellowship is broken
The Fellowship must make a decision of whether to go West towards Minis Tirith or East into Mordor. Frodo leaves to think up on the decision, and is followed by Boromir who attempts to take the Ring when he cannot convince Frodo to "lend" it to him. Frodo puts the Ring on to avoid capture and is nearly discovered by Sauron. Frodo makes the decision to head into Mordor alone, but Sam guesses as much and joins him just in time. They cross the river together and enter Emyn Muil.

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli leave in search of Merry and Pippin
Boromir is killed by Orcs and Merry and Pippin are captured. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli send Boromir's body down the Rauros and they leave in search of the captured Hobbits.

The Orcs carry Merry and Pippin away from Rauros
The Orcs that captured Merry and Pippin fight amongst themselves, with the Uruk-hai of Isengard killing several of the Northerners. Pippin is able to free his hands in the confusion. The hobbits are forced to run along with the Orcs, and carried or dragged when they cannot stay on their feet. At some point in the night Pippin drops his Elven brooch.

Gandalf and Treebeard see one another in Fangorn, but do not speak.
