The Orcs that captured Merry and Pippin fight amongst themselves, with the Uruk-hai of Isengard killing several of the Northerners. Pippin is able to free his hands in the confusion. The hobbits are forced to run along with the Orcs, and carried or dragged when they cannot stay on their feet. At some point in the night Pippin drops his Elven brooch.
