Sorry McSweeney's, You're WRONG

Nov. 5, 2024

Don't worry, I know McSweeney's is a satirical website. I'm HAVING FUN being so upset about what they got HORRIBLY WRONG.

Last week McSweeney's wrote an article about a Presidential debate and I was, to put it mildly, so offended that I spent a dozen hours updating my website and getting the blog functionality working again.

Here's the offending line, in all it's disgusting glory:

HARRIS: Immigration is America. The cedar waxwing flies down to South America every year. And then they come back. It’s natural, it’s beautiful, it’s our strength. Do we really want an America without cedar waxwings? Because let me make one thing clear: that’s America’s most stylish bird.
Cedar Waxwing

Look, I love the cedar waxwing. Back in 2006 I saw some outside the window of my apartment and it woke me up to the fact that my boring hometown had beautiful birds worthy of attention. They are certainly striking, with a color scheme and profile unique to Southeast Texas, if not quite all of America.

But are we really going to say it's the most stylish bird in America, when we have chart toppers like this? And those are just from the grouse family - I didn't even get to the weird ducks, or the warblers! Sure, maybe these don't fit your bill for most stylish bird in America, but if you really need the bright green, offset by the black face mask and splash of color on the tip of the tail, the cedar waxwing still comes second to it's cousin, the Bohemian Waxwing:

Bohemian Waxwing

This stylish bird has everything the cedar waxwing has, plus bonus yellow and black on the wingtips. Look, I don't want to disparage Harris too much for this comment she didn't actually make on a satirical website making a silly joke, but the truth about birds is important to me.

We are lucky to live in a country chock full of amazingly diverse birds (look at it's little horns!), and we need to think critically about these birds all the time. There is so much style on display that I couldn't let McSweeney get away with this outrage. Disagree? Please argue with me about birds on Mastodon.
