Primary Identification

An easy to recognize bird thanks to red and orange stripes set against the otherwise all black body. The Red-winged Blackbird will often perch on small trees, fences, or bushes, presenting the distinguishing marks in an easy to spot manner. Fortunately, even from below, or while the bird is in flight, the patch of color on the shoulder will remain visible.
